News
Hi Christ City,
We had our AGM on Sunday where we shared some exciting news about the future of our network of neighbourhood churches. For those who were unable to attend, here is a video of the announcement and a summary below of its content.
Would you be praying with us as we step into what God has for our churches in the coming years.
If you have any questions, please join us for our family meeting where there will be an opportunity for that.
Christ City Church Network Update
Our Vision
We are a network of neighborhood churches, each maintaining its independence as a local body. Each church is led by a local lead pastor and affirmed by neighborhood elders. We are joined together in a network by a shared theological vision for ministry built upon a common doctrinal foundation.
Our Current Reality
Each of our churches is thriving, with strong local eldership, consistent weekly attendance, and financial income. However, we’ve also reached a stage of complexity that requires simplification for the sake of faithfulness and fruitfulness in mission.
Our Decision
We’ve decided that it is the right time to start looking at each of our church plants—Kitsilano, East Vancouver, and Surrey—to become their own legal entities. This will allow them to be truly governed and overseen by their neighborhood elders, enabling decisions to be made for those local communities by those entrusted with their care.
Maintaining the Network
While we’re suggesting this move towards legal independence, we have also agreed that we want to maintain a network of relational accountability and cooperation. This is in keeping with the vision that we have always held.
Practical Implications
In the day-to-day, things will feel very similar for most people. You will still be part of your neighborhood church, and we will still be a part of a network of churches, doing things together.
Key Changes
- South Vancouver will continue to be Christ City Church.
- East Vancouver, Kitsilano, and Surrey will become their own charitable societies, each with a different name as separate legal entities.
- All current network ministries and staff will move into South Vancouver under the oversight of the South Vancouver elders.
- East Vancouver, Kitsilano, and Surrey can continue to participate in network ministries (e.g., Women’s Bible Studies, Youth etc.), but the goal is that these ministries will eventually be established locally.
- South Vancouver will continue to support the other churches through administration and media support.
Why Now?
- We’re ready. The churches have matured, and the eldership teams have been established.
- It won’t happen quickly. We wanted to bring you into this decision early. The earliest this is going to happen is 2026.
We are excited about this next step and believe that it is in obedience to where the Lord is calling us.
On behalf of the elders of our network of neighbourhood churches,
Jon
