Christ City Bible Reading Plan

Resource

Bible Reading plans are like gyms. We get excited about them in January, weary of them in February, and forget about them by March. We begin with the best of intentions but they often become a source of shame for the drop-outs and pride for the faithful. So why try follow one?

Well, because like exercise, regular bible reading is essential for our (spiritual) health, and if we’re honest, we’re not as healthy as we’d like to be.

We’ve created a bible reading plan to encourage the church to get into a healthy rhythm of bible reading and we’ve included some features that will help mitigate against some of the usual pitfalls and hurdles:

  1. A manageable pace:

Bible-in-a-year plans are great but they tend to set off at an unmanageable pace for the average reader. It leads to falling behind, feeling discouraged, and giving up early in the year.

This plan is set at a 2-year pace… with regular “catch-up” days to help you get back on track.

  1. Alternating Testaments:

This plan alternates between OT and NT so that you aren’t in a single genre for too long and it doesn’t take you a year to get to Jesus!

  1. Book by book:

Other than the accompanying Psalms or Proverbs, this plan goes through one book at a time. I find other plans that skip between 2-3 books in a single day result in a surface level reading that dislocates me from the context. Going through a book at a time enables you to track with the single story within each book.

This feature also means that you can join in for individual books if you join the plan later on or fall behind.

Our prayer is that this will encourage the building of some healthy spiritual habits that will increase the fear of God, the love of Christ, and the fruit of the Spirit in your life. And when you fail, falter, or fall behind, that you’d not feel condemned or judged, but you’d jump back onto the plan with joy at getting to hear your Father’s words to you again.

Feel free to grab a printed booklet of the reading plan from the Connect Table on Sunday, or use the printable which you can download here.
